It is also essential for anybody dealing with clients, customers, or co-workers\u2014in other words, just about every working person. Good communicators have the power to inform, inspire, and create trust.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"\" style=\"--fontsize: 48; line-height: 1.1;\" data-fontsize=\"48\" data-lineheight=\"52.8px\">Tips for Improving communication skills:<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Know your audience \u2013 <\/strong>What information does your audience need? What are their expectations? Clearly understanding this allows you to adapt your message accordingly and present the most relevant points. In the <em>Twelve Absolutes of Leadership<\/em>, Gary Burnison offers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/report-on-business\/careers\/careers-leadership\/why-communication-is-essential-for-great-leaders\/article4098019\/\">this advice<\/a>: \u201cbefore you speak, make sure you listen and observe; knowing your audience is as important as the message you&#8217;re delivering.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><strong>Be clear and concise \u2013 <\/strong>Don\u2019t muddy your communications with ambiguity or an abundance of detail. Be specific and know what you\u2019re talking about. Mike Myatt reminds us in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/mikemyatt\/2012\/04\/04\/10-communication-secrets-of-great-leaders\/#549fa46222fe\">\u201c10 Communication Secrets of Great Leaders\u201d<\/a> that time is a precious commodity, which makes it critical for leaders to \u201clearn how to cut to the chase and hit the high points.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><strong>Listen \u2013 <\/strong>Communication isn\u2019t a one-way street. Listen to your audience\u2014what they\u2019re saying and what they\u2019re <em>not<\/em> Effective communication isn\u2019t just conveying information; it\u2019s having a significant conversation with your audience. Also, be aware of your audience\u2019s body language and other non-verbal communication.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Be personal \u2013 <\/strong>Today leaders need to reveal something of themselves. People want to be able to relate to you, so be yourself! Personal, engaging, and empathetic exchanges of information lead to effective communication. The Young Entrepreneurs Council <a href=\"https:\/\/www.inc.com\/young-entrepreneur-council\/14-best-practices-for-more-effective-communication.html\">recommends using language<\/a> that\u2019s distinctly yours and not overly specific to the corporate environment.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Repeat \u2013 <\/strong>We\u2019re constantly bombarded with messages, and it\u2019s impossible to retain them all. Emphasize the important information you want people to remember. Repeat your key points and repeat them again\u2014your audience will thank you.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>According to Mike Myatt, great leaders talk about their ideas in ways that speak to their audience\u2019s emotions and aspirations. They realize if their message doesn\u2019t take deep root with the audience then it likely won\u2019t be understood, much less championed.<\/p>\n<p>Some of his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/mikemyatt\/2012\/04\/04\/10-communication-secrets-of-great-leaders\/#549fa46222fe\">principles of excellent communication<\/a> are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Others before self<\/strong> \u2013 You\u2019ll learn far more by intensely focusing on the other party\u2019s wants and needs, than by focusing on your own agenda.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Speak not with forked tongue<\/strong> \u2013 People won\u2019t open up to those they don\u2019t trust. When people sense a leader is worthy of their trust, they\u2019ll invest time and take risks.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Have an open mind <\/strong>\u2013 Seek out those with dissenting opinions and opposing positions\u2014not to convince them to change their minds, but to understand what\u2019s on their mind. This will challenge you, helping you to stretch and develop.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Top three tips for Effective Leadership Communication:<\/h2>\n<p>Members of the Young Entrepreneurial Council contributed to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.inc.com\/young-entrepreneur-council\/14-best-practices-for-more-effective-communication.html\">14 best practices<\/a> for more effective leadership communication. Here are a few:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Be relatable \u2013 It\u2019s easier to communicate effectively if you know your team or employees as individuals. The lower your pedestal, the more they\u2019ll rally around you.<\/li>\n<li>Find your own voice \u2013 People respect authenticity and they\u2019re more willing to follow real leaders, not corporate puppets. Speak with your own voice.<\/li>\n<li>Respond in a timely manner \u2013 Do your best to be responsive to everyone, whether it is an employee, vendor, or prospect.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Of course, you will need to adapt your communication to the context.
